The wooden Wang Church in Karpacz is a place that remains in memory for a long time. Its Nordic soul, embedded in pine beams, attracts lovers of history, architecture, and tranquility from all over Europe. Picturesquely located at the foot of the Karkonosze Mountains, away from the city hustle, the Wang Church in Karpacz creates a unique space for reflection and contemplation – regardless of the season.
The Wang Temple is a unique wooden architecture monument. It was built in Norway, in the town of Vang, at the turn of the 12th and 13th centuries as a so-called stave church – characteristic of Scandinavia post church. In the 19th century, due to poor technical condition, it was dismantled and sold. Thanks to the initiative of Countess Frederikke von Reden, the structure was transported to Poland. In 1842 the temple was re-erected in Karpacz, where it has served the congregation as an Evangelical Augsburg church until today.
What distinguishes the Wang Church in Karpacz is not only its age but also the construction method. It was made of solid pine wood without the use of nails. Its decorations are inspired by Viking culture, which gives the temple a unique character.
Right next to the temple stands a stone bell tower – added after the building was relocated to Poland. It serves a protective function, shielding the temple from strong gusts of wind. Nearby, it's also worth noticing the figure of the Mountain Spirit – often photographed by tourists.
When visiting the Wang Church in Karpacz, it's worth stopping by the small cemetery right next to the temple. Among others, the outstanding poet Tadeusz Różewicz and Henryk Tomaszewski – the creator of the Pantomime Theatre – rest here. This intimate place attracts not only by its symbolism but also by the silence that encourages contemplation.
The area around the temple is family-friendly. Wang Church in Karpacz can be visited with toddlers – older children (from 6 years old) may enter inside, younger ones stay supervised outside. A hardened Via Sacra path is available, which can be easily navigated by people with baby strollers or wheelchairs. On-site there are toilets and a souvenir shop.
The temple can be visited daily:
from April 15 to October 31 – from 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM
from November 1 to April 14 – from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM
Every Sunday and holiday at 10:00 AM, services are held. On these days, sightseeing is possible after the liturgy – from 11:30 AM.
Entry to the temple grounds requires a fee:
Adults: 14 PLN
Children from 6 years old, pupils, students up to 26 years old: 8 PLN (with ID)
Entry only to the churchyard: 2 PLN
Photography/filming: 5 PLN
